Advice needed on surgery

Hi,

I recently came across this website while searching for answers to questions I have relating to having my tail bone removed. I am seeing the orthopedic surgeon on Jan. 30, 2008. What I would like to know (from people who have had this surgery) is:

  1. How bad is the surgery itself?
  2. How much pain should I expect following the surgery? (someone posted that they had a morphine drip - I am allergic to morphine so this scares me!!!)
  3. How long will I have to stay in the hospital?
  4. How soon will I be able to move around and resume any kind of normal activity?
  5. Will I still need pain killers once I am sent home? (I take them now but want off of them soon)

Any other information that anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated! I want to have this done since I have been in pain for over 2 years but I am a big baby when it comes to any kind of surgery! I don't like being put to sleep, or the after effects of the anesthesia, I hate staying in the hospital, and I hate being scared of having this done. I have read several posts and for the most part people are very happy that they had it done... I guess I just need some encouragement to get over my fear!

I went to see the orthopedic surgeon yesterday (Jan. 30). She told me that a part of the tailbone is out of place and she has agreed that removing it would be the only solution. I was distressed to hear that this injury has also been the cause of arthritis setting in!

I still do not have a date for surgery because this doctor doesn't perform this type of surgery! She is checking with 2 other doctors in the state (I live in Maine) to see if either of them would be willing to do it! If not then I will have to travel to Boston which is a 7 hour ride from my home! I am concerned about being that far away (if it comes to that) from home and the trip home isn't sounding very comfortable. Not to mention that I would have to go back later to have the stitches removed.

I am wondering if there is anyone who has had this done in Maine and if so, Who does this and Where? Now that I have finally (after 3 years) found someone who has found the problem and has agreed that it must be removed I have this dilemma of who will do it, when and where! And all of this on top of the fear of actually having it done. I've had a lot of people email me and tell me that it isn't as bad as I think it is going to be, but I still worry!

Update, 2008-03-23

I was just rejected for surgery by a second doctor in Maine. They aren't saying that it is because I don't need this done, they are saying that they 'just don't want to do it'. I am at wits end!!!!!!! I am in pain all the time! I cannot find a dr. in Maine that is willing to do the surgery! I am willing to go to Boston if I could find someone there who would do it. The problem is, I can't seem to get my pcp to do any referrals to anyone who may help so, I am on my own to find the doctor, try to get the referral done, set up my own appointment, etc....

I am extremely frustrated and don't understand why I can't find someone who will remove the coccyx so that I can get on with my life, PAIN FREE!!!!!

Has anyone had this surgery done in MAINE? If so, PLEASE let me know who did it and where so that I can contact them and hopefully get mine taken care of!
